The county board of commissioners controls the budget but has only limited authority to make laws or ordinances.

Munising is the county seat of Alger County, located within the foothills of Munising Bay on the south shore of Lake Superior. City government consists of a City Commission, Mayor, City Manager and Staff, and Department of Public Works. Several volunteer committees are in place with residents working together to promote a healthy community.
